Regional News 2008/32
Hi All, Last weekend we had the Sandford Course here at Brookfield with lots of youth and lots of music. It was good to see Robyn Biswell still helping run this course and wearing her Scout Associates scarf. It’s the first one I’ve seen in action so deserved a special mention. Yesterday morning we had a really white frost that gave the daffodils a bit of a fright but it was followed by a beautiful day. The Police were in for the day doing outdoor training so the frost kept them on their toes. Hope it stays like this as we have quite a busy weekend coming up. The last of the Summer Wine team had a good day on Wednesday and analysed the Olympic endeavours at smoko. We are thinking of trying out for either the relay team or the bob sleigh at the next Olympics -we start training soon. But Foggy is still keen to try synchronised tractors under water.

CLEAN UP THE WORLD The Asia-Pacific Region has chosen the ongoing Clean Up the World campaign as a partnership project for Scouts in the Asia-Pacific Region and will run from 19th to 21st September 2008.
Scouts have been involved in Clean Up the World since it's inception 16 years ago, joining an estimated 35 million volunteers from 110 countries annually. This year, the Asia-Pacific Region supports a more synchronised, collective and documented action of Scouts to clean up their communities, or form partnerships at local, regional and national levels.
We have been asked to: 1) Identify clean up initiatives such as climate change awareness, recycling projects, educational campaigns, resource recovery projects, tree planting, water reuse and conservation, competitions and exhibitions etc.
2) Join as a member and register initiatives with 'Clean Up the World' at info@cleanuptheworld.org or post a letter to 18 Bridge Rd, Glebe NSW 2037 Australia. Membership is free.
3) Document initiatives with reports and photos and send them to Asia-Pacific Regional Office of World Scout Bureau by 31st October 2008
4) Integrate Clean Up the World projects and events in your annual calendar of activities.

LIFE AFTER WELLINGTON Hi Ian, I still enjoy your news from the Lower North Island and when I'm not too busy I try and figure out your weekly quiz!
I'm enjoying working up here in Auckland. I have a nice office that looks out onto a large lawn and we have a number of native trees around the packaging factory. I regularly see three quail foraging on the grass and think about you at Brookfield. We see and hear lots of Tuis too, some occasional doves, ducks and Pukekos, but don't seem to have any Kereru here in industrial West Auckland. I am enjoying the luxury of a 5min drive to work, compared to the 30min train commute I used to have in Wellington. I'm not involved with any local Scout Groups yet, but next year our son Ewan will be old enough to join Keas. I took my boys to Eden Park last weekend to experience a game of NPC rugby, but they were more interested in the hot chips and the man dressed as a seagull (the mascot).
It really is a small world! One of our forklift operators came into our office area asking who 'Keith Charlton' was, and it turns out he's the Waitoru Zone Cub Leader and had been receiving the National Weekly News emails from me for ages. I'm trying to keep fit by going running with some of the guys here at work during my lunch break, and it turns out that one of them is a new Cub Leader for the 2nd Motutara Waimauku Cub Pack, has just finished his First 100 Days training and is really enjoying it. I just discovered that our receptionist is the aunt of somebody I know through Rovers.

About fifty Scouts participated in fun events such as flutter board, egg & spoon, underwater kick and T-shirt relay races. In addition seven scouts successfully completed the 200 metre "swim for life" challenge event. Tawa, Ngaio and Northland were 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Competitive trophy respectively. Northland, Eastern Bays and 1st Karori were 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Best Support trophy. Well done Tawa and Northland! Thank you also for Brooklyn and Karori West for attending. LOWER HUTT ZONE ZONE GOOD TURN – 7th SEPTEMBER 2008
The planning for the Lower Hutt ZONE GOOD TURN is well under way and we now have most groups signed up for a time between 10am and 2pm. Thanks to all those group leaders who have gotten back to me during the week. If your scout group does not have a time, then please email daveianmccarthy@gmail.com as soon as possible so we can slot you in. For those Rover crews and venturer units wanting to come, we also have some track work next to the planting that needs to be done so if you think planting is just for little people, then by all means please join in on that too!
Each group will have an allocation of natives to plant during their hour and once the digging is completed you are invited to explore the mountain bike park with your friends, parents, kids etc. Maps are being made available and suitable tracks for different ages will be clearly displayed.
The Hutt City Council who are supporting the project are kindly putting on a BBQ so some hot sausages will also be available to reward all your good work.
See you there, end of Waiu Street in Wainui from 10am! Bring your smiles, drink bottles, bikes etc and we will get the spades, maps, plants, loos, and more importantly, FOOD! Dave
KAPITI COASTAL ZONE Spring has arrived... I can tell because there are loads of daffodils in our garden and lambs are all around us. Today I was up in Levin visiting my great aunt who is 103 years old.. and I couldn't help but be awestruck by the view of the Tararua's covered in snow... what a sight.. unfortunately they are promising us more rain for the weekend...
You will have already read about the Sea Scout Regatta coming up in December/January this year. It is being held in the Porirua Harbour - our Zone.. At a recent meeting we were advised that the caterer had not had a single offer to help with the catering.(now one offer) Come on girls and guys surely there are some of you in the Zone (or Region) that would be prepared to join in for a day or two maybe more to assist in the kitchen/dining room. It would be ideal service for Rovers. Scouting Associates could get to know others in the Region and of course Leaders. If anyone is prepared to help out at this National event please contact me jakiw@xtra.co.nz
Keep warm and dry and remember summer is coming... Have a great week Jaki Williams
BROOKFIELD: This week I sent out the programme and information for the 50th. Celebration Weekend on 6 -7 December. Judging by the feedback already it promises to be a great weekend and if you are planning to come to the formal luncheon you’d better get your booking and money in quick. Unfortunately seats are limited for this function but we can take all comers for the rest of the weekend. If you didn’t get the info drop me a line on scoutservicecentre@xtra.co.nz
CUBS IN ACTION: This is your last reminder for Centennial Cub Day 13 Sept - 100 Sixes make 100 models in 100 minutes Where: Ngati Toa Domain Hall, Plimmerton When: Sat 13th Sept 2 to 4 pm Cost: $3 per cub (incl badge) ($2 per leader for badge)

NEWS FROM THE GROUPS: Roslyn Group, Palmerston North (A follow on from last week) The Venturers fundraising dinner was a big success with good catering, lots of glamorous and not-so glamorous movie stars. My favourite was Venturer Superwoman (who was on cooking duties of course!) & a fun time had by all.
Freaky but I think we struck the only sunny warm day for a Sunday this winter out on Kapiti! 40 of us enjoyed the tramp to the top of the hill, accompanied by a continual chorus from all of the native birds. We managed to fill 3 rubbish bags with our beach clean-up, the best 'cleaner-upper' of the Cubs being rewarded with a beach ball that GL found amongst debris on the foreshore. A great trip counting towards the Cub conservation badge and photographer badge for some.
LAST WEEK’S TEASER:How many squares, of any size, are on an 8x8 chessboard?
Answer: 204
THIS WEEK’S TEASER: At a recent motorsport gathering, four proud owners were grouped together around the blue Ferrari, discussing their gleaming sports cars. Alan was overheard bragging about his brand new silver Mercedes. Mr Smith went to great lengths to explain to Brian, the virtues of his blue Ferrari. Mr Wilshaw and David occasionally made eye contact. Mr Richards showed everyone a recent photo of his red Rolls Royce. Mr Stone listened intently while Charles went on about his green Corvette. Who owns which car? Have a good weekend, Ian Smith

Hi All, Our religious retreat people left camp last Sunday so we can get up there again. Unfortunately we’ve had a couple of major burst water pipes but they are all fixed now thanks to Andrew and Roger. The Last of the Summer Wine Team had to clear a fallen tree from the creek on Wednesday which meant young Pat and myself spent the morning knee deep in water. Luckily it wasn’t a bad day and the water wasn’t exactly icy. In fact we’ve had a couple of good days and I see we have some new born lambs down the road. It won’t be long before the grass is growing like crazy.

In addition forty-five cubs successfully completed the 200 metre "swim for life" challenge event, twice as many as last year. Tawa, Northland and Ngaio were 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Competitive trophy respectively. Tawa, Northland and Karori West were 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Best Support trophy. Well done Tawa! LOWER HUTT ZONE Zone Winter Scout Camp Preparations are well advanced for our Zone Winter Scout Camp to be held at Brookfield 22 - 24 August. With the weather being the way it has been lately I hope all our Scouts know how to keep themselves warm and dry when camping in the rain! If you have any final questions about this event, please contact our Zone Scout Leader, Norm Heke.
Zone Good Turn Helping others is a big part of Scouting, something we’ve all promised to do. While most of the daily “good turns” that we try to do may be quite small, occasionally the opportunity presents itself to help on a much bigger scale. That’s exactly what we plan to do as a Zone on Sunday 7 September during our Zone Good Turn. This year we will be helping out with work at the mountain bike park at the end of Waiu Street in Wainuiomata, including the planting of native manukas, flaxes and other bushes.
Like last year, we would like each Group to come and help for an hour some time between 10am and 2pm. A lot of Groups have already signed up for their preferred time, but if you haven’t, please get in touch with Dave McCarthy [daveianmccarthy@gmail.com].

KAPITI COASTAL ZONE Gosh what a week - is this rain ever going to stop. Worse than UK and that is saying something. While waiting for the rain to stop I have checked out the term 4 programmes, they look great. Gosh how much easier it is to have the bulk of the weekly programme prepared with individuals still able to add their own personal touches. I wish they were around when I was running a weekly programme..

NEWS FROM THE GROUPS: Roslyn Group, Palmerston North Our Ventures had to abandon a 3-day tramp around Mt Taranaki a couple of weekends ago after holing up in a hut Friday night, hearing the weather forecast Saturday morning, and deciding it was time to head home. Just as well they did. I was playing interclub golf at Manawatu course Saturday afternoon and when I finished (in pouring rain) about 4pm I was in the Pro Shop talking to the Pro who used to be at our Club and he had the rain radar on his computer. I became very concerned when he showed me that Taranaki was copping it. Wondered whether I'd come home to a call for Search & Rescue - but no, it was a message they'd abandoned the tramp first thing Saturday morning and everyone was safely home in Palmerston North. Group Leader and Zone Leader breath signs of relief!! There are some very sensible Venturers in Palmerston North after all!!
But never mind, Roslyn Scouting has bounced back with the Venturers catering for 150 tomorrow night for their annual fund-raising, come-as-your-favourite movie star (Indiana Jones for me - stock whip 'n all!) dinner. But the bad news for myself & Gail is that we have to be at the Scout Hall by 6.45am Sunday morning for the Cub 'n Kea trip to Kapiti Island. Gail is meeting up with "Assistant St Joseph's GL" in Paraparaumu while I spend the day helping the Cubs towards earning their conservation badge!!! At least the weather looks like it might behave on Sunday.
Kind Regards to the Summer Wine Team (keep up the good work, in-between Summer Wine-type socialising) Cheers Doc (Craig Ross)

Hi All, What a pity the rain has started again – we had a couple of good days there in the middle. On Wednesday the Last of the Summer Wine team were working around the main campfire circle in a nice bit of sun. Foggy noted that the big Magnolia had started to bloom and as the day wore on more and more flowers appeared. The day lent itself to just leaning on the wall, enjoying the sun and watching the others work. Thanks this week to Ray Hurle who dropped off a pile of very old scouting magazines, badges, books and other bits and pieces.

CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY AT THE HUTT VALLEY GANG SHOW
Come and celebrate the Centenary of Scouting in New Zealand at the Hutt Valley Gang Show. This year’s Show is all about the Centenary as we tell the story of Scouting and Guiding in New Zealand in a modern and fun way. It’s our contribution to the Movements’ celebrations and an enjoyable way for youth and leaders alike to learn about how Scouting came to be.
So leaders, why not use the Show as an opportunity to celebrate the Centenary with your Cubs, Scouts or Venturers. Perhaps you could precede it or follow it with a Centenary Party for your Pack, Troop or Unit to wind up the term.
If you have never been to a Gang Show before then this is the year to give it a go. It’s a really fun variety-type show with lots of singing and dancing and sketches, great costumes and plenty of laughs. Everyone is bound to enjoy it.
This year’s season has seven performances: Monday 22 September 2008 at 7.30pm Tuesday 23 September 2008 at 7.30pm Wednesday 24 September 2008 at 7.30pm Thursday 25 September 2008 at 7.30pm Friday 26 September 2008 at 7.30pm (Rover Night) Saturday 27 September 2008 at 2.00pm Saturday 27 September 2008 at 7.30pm

Oh and by the way tickets for the Show are in high demand with 45% of all seats now sold. Monday night is particularly full and we are unable to take any further group bookings for that night. So we encourage you to get your booking into Richard quickly so you don’t miss out! And you definitely don’t want to miss out; it’s going to be a Show to remember.
TRAINING: Wellington Zone Training On Sunday all expectations were exceeded when 18 Kea, Cub and Scout leaders attended a day session to cover all four modules of the First one hundred days training. 11 Leaders completed all the modules in one day, five completed outstanding modules and one now has only tools for the job to complete. Well done to all the leaders attending, and thanks to the trainers (Paul, Heather and Lois) that made this possible. If you were counting you would see that I am a leader short, this was a leader dong tools as she was changing sections.
I would have liked to have seen Ian Smiths face when he got the email to tell him that 11 leaders had just completed their 100 days training on the same day. John Hutton Zone Training Leader 04 971 5600 wellingtonztl@gmail.com

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR CHAIRPERSON HUTT VALLEY GANG SHOW 2010
Yes, you read correctly 2010!
The Hutt Valley Gang Show is a cooperative endeavour involving the four Wellington area Zones i.e. Rimutaka, Lower Hutt, Wellington and Kapiti Coastal with oversight responsibility currently resting with the Lower Hutt Zone Leader. Under the protocol established for the operation of the Gang Show the organising team for each Show is appointed afresh at the beginning of each Show cycle. The first such appointment is that of Gang Show Chairperson who has overall responsibility for all aspects of the Show including business and production elements. This includes appointment of the Production Director and the Business Manager who, together with the Chairperson form the Gang Show Executive.
In order to ensure continuity and a smooth handover from one Show to the next, it is important to get the 2010 Show cycle underway within the next few weeks. Accordingly, expressions of interest are invited from persons interested in being Chairperson for the 2010 Show. Key aspects of the role involve: • Oversight responsibility for all aspects of the Show including those areas which are the direct responsibility of the Production Director and Business Manager; • The financial management of the Show; • Liaising with relevant Scouting Zone Leaders and Guide Regional Coordinators; • Hosting dignitaries, supporters and sponsors; • Representing the Show at national gang show meetings and events as appropriate.
Key attributes required for the role are strong organisational and adult management skills. Some experience of Gang Show and/or musical theatre is an advantage but not essential.
Expressions of interest should be emailed (in confidence) to Andrew Rodgers, Lower Hutt Zone Leader at rodgersfamily@clear.net.nz.
KAPITI COASTAL ZONE 42 of us enjoyed a very friendly dinner at Cookies Paraparaumu Beach on Saturday evening.. The uniformed members were up by 19% - Keas up 28, Cubs up 40, Scouts up 12 (most unusual after a Jamboree) Venturers down 5 (Waikanae unit closed). Adult Leaders were up 15 so overall Uniformed members were up 102. Even the committee members are up by 12. What a great result!
The Cosgrove Scout Training course 15/17 August at Brookfield is being organised by Michael Corcoran our new Zone Scout Leader... so if it isn't already too late, get your application in quick smart. On Sunday 7 September we have a Management Team tea meeting at Paraparaumu. I3 September is the Centennial Cub day with the theme of being 100. The event will be held in our Zone so do plan to get your Cubs along to bake and create 100 items plus much more. The Gang Show too is September 22-27 what a great way to end the term by taking your Kea, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers along to the show. December 6 & 7 all the Keas Cubs Scouts Venturers Leaders and supporters from around the country will be walking the full length of the Te Ararao Walkway. Our area will be Waitarere down to Titahi Bay. What a challenge that will be. I wonder what it will look like from Google earth.
Sadly another wet weekend ahead of us.. but summer is on the way.. Have a great week Jaki Williams
